Our history

The first year of trading

From Woodstock, Cape Town, 1Pass works with small teams across South Africa that still handle access in risky, manual ways. We provide secure password storage, clearer access control and a simple view of who can get into what.

Those early months were shaped by practical conversations with business owners, bookkeepers and office managers who did not want complicated systems. They wanted something that could be set up quickly, would not slow staff down, and would work for teams with mixed technical skill. That feedback set the tone for everything that followed.

  • Initial security reviews for small teams
  • Basic vault structure planning
  • Simple access rules for owners and admins
  • Support for businesses moving away from shared passwords

Turning access into a process

As more local clients came on board, we moved from helping with individual password problems to building a repeatable process for team access. During this period, the work expanded beyond storage into setup, onboarding and training. We started mapping permissions properly, so staff only had access to the apps and records they needed for their role. That cut down on confusion and made staff changes far easier to manage.

We also learned that support had to be plain spoken and practical. A small business in Durban, Pretoria or Gqeberha does not need theory. It needs a plan for how the team will log in Monday morning, who approves new access, and how to remove access when someone leaves. Over time, that process-driven approach had become a core part of our service.

  • Password migration support for growing teams
  • Permission mapping by role and department
  • Offboarding steps for staff changes
  • Admin training for day to day control

Support for growing South African teams

Over the following years, more clients were running teams across multiple sites and working with staff who split time between office, home and client locations. That shift made single sign-on more valuable because fewer logins meant fewer delays. We refined our setup work so that businesses could connect common applications, reduce password reuse and give staff one clear way into the tools they used every day.

Load-shedding also became a real planning issue for some teams. Businesses needed access processes that were reliable even when power cuts interrupted normal routines. We therefore paid closer attention to recovery steps, admin access, and simple handovers so important work could continue without drama. Our support model became more structured, with clearer rollout stages and better training for both users and administrators.

  • SSO configuration for common business applications
  • Remote rollout support for multi-site teams
  • Training for new users and administrators
  • Support for businesses working through load-shedding interruptions

Stronger controls and clearer governance

Convenience alone stopped being enough for many clients. They wanted better governance around access, especially as teams became more hybrid and more applications were being used every month. We responded by tightening our approach to quarterly access reviews, clearer vault structure design and more careful control over who could approve changes. That helped owners and managers see where access was too broad and where roles needed to be adjusted.

This period also pushed our training work further. We found that secure systems only hold if staff understand them, so our training coordinator and customer success team focused on short practical sessions rather than long technical talks. The result was better adoption, fewer support issues and stronger day-to-day securtiy across client teams.

  • Quarterly access review routines
  • Vault structure design for smaller and larger teams
  • Stronger approval workflows for admins
  • Practical training for staff adoption

A more focused South African support model

More recently, 1Pass sharpened its support footprint around the places where many of our clients were growing fastest: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Stellenbosch, Century City and Gqeberha, while keeping our Cape Town base firmly in Woodstock. The goal was not to add noise, but to make support easier to reach and more relevant to local business conditions. Different regions have different team sizes, office setups and onboarding needs, so our process had to stay flexible.

Under the leadership of Lukhanyo Maseko, the team kept refining how we onboarded new clients and how we helped them migrate existing passwords with as little interruption as possible. Each project now followed a clearer path, from initial review through setup, training and post-launch support. Clients appreciated that the work was straightforward and that the same people stayed involved from start to finish.

  • Regional support for major South African business centres
  • Remote onboarding for teams outside Cape Town
  • More structured migration planning
  • Consistent handover between setup and support
